What is CBD and how does it work?
...what about THC?
CBD is the abbreviation of cannabidiol. It is one of 113
active cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant and account for 40% of the plant's extract. There are three types of cannabis. The hemp plant is a hybrid of cannabis sativa and the plant that is used in veterinary medicine. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) contains neurotransmitters that bind to proteins located along the surface of cells. Studies have shown that when CBD comes in contact with those cells, it affects the systems associated with the brain, spine, and nerves. The FDA has approved cannabis-derived medications for the treatment of nausea, pain, and seizures. Preliminary clinical trials have shown that CBD may reduce anxiety, inflammation, and pain, and tumors. Hemp does have the same psychoactivity found in other cannabis plants. The psychoactive component is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC found in marijuana can range from 10 - 25%. The THC found in hemp can range from 0.0 - 0.3%.
Why can't I speak to a
a Veterinarian about CBD?
The American Medical Veterinary Association (AMVA) and the Veterinary Medical Examiners (VME) restricts what a Veterinarian can prescribe, dispense, or recommend in terms of Cannabis products. At this time, these two organizations would like to see more evidence of the efficacy and safety of CBD. Several small studies and clinical trials, involving pet CBD are currently ongoing at Cornell, Baylor, and Colorado State. In September 2020, guidelines regarding the FDA's approval process concerning cannabis-derived products were released which may inspire more investigational research. California has legally restricted the VME's ability to revoke a Veterinarians license should a doctor chooses to give a pet owner CBD advice and Veterinarians, including those in California, still do not have the approval to recommend a product or offer dosing guidance. WildLifeRx monitors press releases concerning pet CBD issued by the AMVA, VME, and FDA. Look for these updates in the 'Learn' section under 'Veterinarians'.
Why choose WildLifeRx
Rosalind Haley began this company because of the desire to help pets and their owners. In 2019, 60 million dollars of pet CBD was sold in the US, many of it was done without any Veterinarian guidance. She wanted to fill this important need by developing a store that not only would carry high-quality vet-approved pet CBD brands but if pet owners needed guidance, they could give us a call and speak to a licensed veterinary technician who could help. Rosalind's extensive career within the pharmaceutical and veterinary fields has qualified her to evaluate products using the same meticulous standards found within the medical industry. The combination of having access to high-quality products, access to a licensed veterinary technician, and access to the most up-to-date scientific information enable pet owners who seek pet CBD, a trusted place to finally go to when they seek CBD for their pets.
